In terms of lab safety, pumping flammable liquids can create hazardous conditions. Both fire and explosions can result if safe handling of materials is not adhered to by lab workers, students, and researchers. Examples of liquids that are flammable include ethyl ether, acetone, and benzene. Combustible liquids include acetic acid, formic acid, and formalin. When flammable and combustible liquids flow, they may create a buildup of static electricity. To reduce the hazard levels, follow these five general safety guidelines. 1)  Always use a metallic pump with air-driven or explosion-proof (XPRF) motor. 2)  Make sure all components are metal. Plastic can build up static charges and cannot be grounded. 3)  Electrically ground the operator and all pump components including motor (even if air-driven), inlet and discharge piping, hose clamps, holding tank, and receiving tank. 4)  Avoid splashing liquids—splashing generates static electricity that can result in ignition or explos

If you collect environmental water samples for testing for dissolved minerals, chemicals, or miscellaneous contaminants, you will need sampling equipment that meets your specific needs. Masterflex  Peristaltic Pumps and Tubing Q: I need a pump to pull up fluid from a reservoir. The pump will be several feet higher than the liquid. What pumps are good for this? A: The term that rates a pump's ability to pull up fluid is called suction lift. You will need to find a pump that has a suction lift, usually rated in feet of H 2 0, which is greater than the distance you need to pump. For example if you wanted to pump a fluid from a well that is 12', then you would need a pump that has a suction lift of at least 12 feet.  One pump technology that is excellent for suction lift is a peristaltic or tubing pump. Double air-operated diaphragm pumps are also great for this type of application, but are air powered.  With either pump, you should always add some extra ability in the pump. If the fluid being pumped is more vi

Masterflex ®  pumps can be used for a variety of applications: pharmaceutical, research & development, manufacturing, food & beverage, and environmental uses. Yet, sometimes the challenge is to choose the correct Masterflex pump, pump head, and tubing to best match a particular application. Here is one scenario: Challenge:  An agricultural company needed to pump ethanol at approximately 7 LPM to a stripping column. They needed a pump drive that would withstand the flammability of ethanol and tubing that provided excellent chemical compatibility. Our solution:  Our   Application Specialist recommended the I/P ® hazardous-duty pump drive and Viton ®  tubing. The I/P hazardous-duty drive is UL-listed for Class 1, Group D, Division 1 hazardous locations.
