MOCACARE Reveals MOCACuff: a New Wireless Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor

Imagen
Hypertension affects more than 70 million adults in the United States, and even more individuals remain undiagnosed. Hypertension increases the risk of developing other serious health conditions, such as heart attacks, kidney damage, and stroke. Even though there are multiple devices on the market that enable people to track their blood pressure at home, consumer adoption of these self-monitoring devices has remained somewhat limited due to persistent deficits in design, portability, accuracy, and/or usability. MOCACARE, a Silicon Valley company focused on developing consumer cardiovascular monitoring devices–with their flagship product, MOCAheart–just unveiled their cutting edge, wireless, and automatic wrist blood pressure monitor, MOCACuff. We at Medgadget were one of the first to test this new device to see what sets it apart from other currently available home blood pressure monitors. MOCACuff has been granted FDA clearance in the United States and is CE-Certified in the Europ

CONTOUR NEXT ONE Bluetooth Connected Glucose Meter Cleared by FDA

Imagen
Ascensia Diabetes Care, a company based in Basel, Switzerland, won FDA clearance to bring to the U.S. market its CONTOUR NEXT ONE blood glucometer. The device has Bluetooth wireless connectivity that allows diabetics to upload their readings to a paired app on their iOS or Android smartphones. The CONTOUR DIABETES app provides historical charts of blood sugar levels and lets patients understand how their diet and physical activity impacts those. This works best if the patient religiously enters the details of his/or her food intake and all the activities that take place throughout the day. All the readings and entered information can be uploaded to the “cloud” and reviewed on a computer. Reports can be emailed to one’s physician or family members to make sure everyone is on the same page and helping to keep the symptoms of diabetes in check. The device works just fine on its own without the app, displaying readings on a built-in screen. An indicator on the left side of the

The Importance of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Imagen
Approximately 890 deaths from coronary heart disease occur outside of the hospital or emergency room every day. Most of these deaths are due to the sudden loss of heart function or sudden cardiac death.1 In 2001 and 2002, there were 6628 workplace fatalities reported to OSHA; 1216 from heart attack, 354 from electric shock, and 267 from asphyxia. A number of these victims, up to 60 percent, might have been saved if automated external defibrillators (AEDs) were immediately available. Chances of survival from sudden cardiac death diminish by 7 - 10 percent for each minute without immediate CPR or defibrillation. After 10 minutes, resuscitation rarely succeeds. An AED is an electronic device designed to deliver an electric shock to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. Ventricular fibrillation may be restored to normal rhythm up to 60 percent of the time if treated promptly with an AED, a procedure called defibrillation.
