The Importance of Oral Health in Parkinson’s Disease

Imagen
Oral health is essential for everyone, but people living with Parkinson’s disease need to pay particular attention to their mouth, teeth and gums to limit any problems. According to the National Parkinsons Foundation, Parkinson’s disease can affect oral health in a number of ways. As facial muscles become impacted by the condition, it can change the way a person speaks and chews, which can be compounded if the patient also has missing teeth or toothaches. Not being able to chew food properly because of dental problems can lead to an increased risk of choking as some may experience problems swallowing larger pieces of food. Aspiration (inhaling particles of food or drink) could also lead to the development of dangerous lung infections such as pneumonia. If the patient is also taking medications to suppress the immune system for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, these may increase the risk of infection if they have any dental problems such as cavities, inflamed gums, l

21 Tips for Washing, Grooming and Going to the Bathroom With Parkinson’s Disease

Imagen
As a person’s Parkinson’s disease progresses, simple everyday tasks such as washing, grooming and going to the bathroom can become difficult due to typical Parkinson’s symptoms such as tremors or rigidity. Those living with the disease will be keen to do as much for themselves as possible and retain as much of their independence as they can, particularly when it comes to personal hygiene. We’ve put together a list of handy tips to help people living with Parkinson’s continue to wash, groom and go to the bathroom easily and safely using information from the National Parkinsons Foundation. Washing Installing at least two fitted handrails near the bath or shower will allow the patient to grab hold of something safe and secure while getting in and out of the bath or shower. These should be professionally fitted if possible to ensure they are strong enough to support the patient’s weight. A chair or bench in the shower or bathtub will help those who have trouble balancing while sta

18 Tips for Getting Dressed With Parkinson’s Disease

Imagen
Parkinson’s disease can affect a person’s ability to do everyday tasks and chores, making even the easiest things complex and frustrating. Getting dressed requires both fine and gross motor skills which may pose difficulties to those living with Parkinson’s disease, but there are ways to make getting dressed easier, according to the National Parkinson Foundation. Allow yourself plenty of time to get dressed in the morning as rushing may only increase stress and worsen Parkinson’s symptoms. Gather all of the clothes needed in one go, rather than making multiple trips to the closet. If possible, wait until your medications have begun to work before you attempt to get dressed. A few gentle stretches may help loosen and warm up muscles, making getting dressed a little easier. If one arm or leg is stiffer than the other, put the stiff one into clothing first. Sit down while getting dressed, using a supportive chair with armrests. Sitting on the edge of the bed to get dressed c

AEDs in Your Workplace

Imagen
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is an electronic device designed to deliver an electric shock to a victim experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. . Ventricular fibrillation, the uncoordinated beating of the heart — which can lead to collapse and death — may be corrected to a normal rhythm up to 60 percent of the time, when treated quickly with an AED. This is referred to as defibrillation. According to OSHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, approximately 890 deaths from coronary heart disease occur outside of the hospital or emergency room every day. Most are due to cardiac arrest.  Each year thousands of deaths occur in the workplace, the leading cause of which is heart attack and cardiac arrest. Many of these deaths could be prevented if an AED was available. An AED in the workplace can provide the critical, timely and necessary treatment that could save a life, if someone in your organization were experiencing a cardiac arrest.  AED’s are easy to use

Imagen
