How to Locate and Set Up Your Analytical Balance

When your new analytical balance arrives, you want to make sure that it is placed in a location that maximizes accuracy. This means you should not locate it where temperature extremes may occur, such as near a window with direct sunlight or next to cooling or heating vents.

Choose a firm surface to hold the balance, one that is stable and does not vibrate. Also make sure the balance is not near any vibrating parts as this may affect readings. Similarly, keep the balance away from airflow that may result from wind or fans. (Depending on your model, laboratory balances are available with stability filters to compensate for vibrations, drafts, or temperature changes.)

Once you assemble the balance per the manufacturer’s instructions, level it using the adjustable feet and spirit level. When the power source is connected, allow the balance to warm-up for about 30-60 minutes and also calibrate the balance before using to secure optimal performance. Some balances offer internal or external calibration and built-in RS-232 to enable connectivity to computers or printers.

Maintain your balance by keeping it clean. Dirt, spills, dust, and other materials can cause issues with the balance’s functionality. Avoid using the balance as a surface to stack items on when not in use. Also, avoid overloading it, which could damage the fragile mechanical devices inside.
