Quality Care Tips for Ultrasound Transducers

Ultrasound transducers are the most often damaged, and the most
expensive replacement part of an ultrasound system. Here are some
simple tips to help with quality control for your transducers…

Handle With Care - Dropping or banging the transducer can damage the
acoustic lens and piezoelectric crystals. Be sure to not whack the
tip of the transducer when shaking or applying gel. Always store
transducers in the transducer holders on the side of your system or on
a securely mounted wall rack when you are not using them. Never store
a TEE transducer in the carrying case, except to transport it.

Inspection Is Key - Cuts in the transducer cable or cracks in the
housing can destroy the electrical safety features of the transducers.
Make sure to examine the transducer for cracks in the handle, on the
nose piece, on the lens material, to the cable strain reliefs or for
damage to the connector. You should also check for swelling of the
lens material, or bent pins to the connector.

Time For Transport – Only use the provided transport case for travel.
Make sure to clean and dry the transducer before storing it in the
transport case. Carefully place your transducer inside the foam area,
being sure not to let any parts or cables hangout.

Prevent Is The Best Defense - Have your probes tested before a
warranty or service contract expires, you will improve both clinical
results and the bottom line.
