Four Tips for Infrared Measurement
To locate a hot spot: First aim outside the area of interest, then scan across the area with an up-and-down motion until you locate the hot spot.
Measure surface temperature only: IR thermometers can’t measure internal temperatures.
Don’t take measurements through glass: Glass has very distinctive reflection and transmission properties that do not allow an accurate IR temperature reading. IR thermometers are not recommended for use in measuring shiny or polished metal surfaces (stainless steel, aluminum, etc.).
Watch environmental conditions: Steam, dust, smoke, etc., can prevent accurate measurements by obstructing the unit’s optics.
