Early Warning: Confined Space Gas Detectors

Tunnels, tanks, ductwork, pipelines—all are defined by OSHA as confined spaces. If the atmosphere is unsafe in these spaces, as determined by gas detectors, fatalities can result. To ensure your safety and that of your workers, monitor the atmospheric hazards continuously.

Sensors in gas detectors indicate the presence of potentially dangerous gases. A confined space gas detector should sense oxygen deficiency or enrichment, toxics, and combustible gases. Alarms may be audible, visual, vibrating, or any combination of these to alert you of changing conditions. Most detectors are encased in rugged housing to withstand industrial and field use.

A gas detector may not be the only safety instrument you need for working in confined spaces. OSHA notes that confined spaces hazards frequently occur in tandem with other hazardous conditions such as the release of energy via electricity, high pressure fluids, and mechanics. Use the OSHA Confined Spaces Advisor for more information about your work area.
