Hill-Rom’s Centrella Smart+ Bed Now Features EarlySense’s Contact-Free Patient Monitoring

Hill-Rom and EarlySense have partnered to introduce contact-free patient monitoring into an already hi-tech patient bed. Hill-Rom’s Centrella Smart+ bed now features EarlySense’s sensor, which is able to track the patient’s heart rate and respiratory rate while laying unseen under the mattress.

The sensor performs measurements more than 100 times per minute and provides live data at the nurse’s station, including warnings when the values reach outside of predefined norms. The companies hope that the new bed will allow clinicians to address patient emergencies faster than before and without having wires in the way once rescue procedures begin.

According to Hill-Rom:

Specific improved clinical outcomes demonstrated with this technology include helping reduce mortality related to “code blue” events by 83 percent, and cardiac arrests by 86 percent. In addition, clinicians reported overall hospital length-of-stay was reduced by 9 percent, and ICU days by 45 percent. Several EarlySense customers have reported that the system also assisted with early detection of sepsis, a condition that, when not identified and treated rapidly, may be life-threatening.

“No patient should deteriorate without prior warning in the hospital environment. Continuous vital signs measurement should be the standard of clinical practice in the United States,” in a statement said Dr. Frank Overdyk, a Charleston, SC-based anesthesiologist and expert on respiratory compromise. “Events such as opioid-induced respiratory depression and loss of life from failure-to-rescue are no longer acceptable given the availability of continuous vital signs monitoring.”
