CARDEA SOLO Wearable ECG Monitor for Detecting Difficult to Diagnose Arrhythmias

Cardiac Insight, a company out of Kirkland, Washington, has been cleared by the FDA to introduce its CARDEA SOLO wearable electrocardiography (ECG) sensing device. The electronic component is inside an electrode patch that is stuck to the skin. The patient is outfitted with the device at the doctor’s office and sent home to live a normal routine. The CARDEA SOLO is water resistant, and so can be worn while showering. It weighs less than an ounce (about 25 grams) and is discretely worn under one’s clothing. The device continuously records up to seven days of ECG data and if the patient feels any suspected symptoms related to an arrhythmia, a button can be pressed to make sure this event is reviewed later.

After the patient returns to the doctor’s office, the electronic component is removed from the patch and placed inside a reader that downloads all the recordings for immediate evaluation by a Cardiac Insight software package. The device can then be disposed of, as it is single use only. The software includes a number of signal processing algorithms that help to quickly track down errant beats and rhythms that may point to specific cardiac conditions.

Here’s what the system analyzes, according to the product page:

Atrial Rhythms
Pauses
Premature Atrial Contractions (PACs – PAC burden)
Supraventricular Tachycardia (atrial runs)
Atrial Fibrillation (AF burden)
Tachycardia
Bradycardia

Ventricular Rhythms
Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs – PVC burden)
Couplets, Triplets
Ventricular Tachycardia (ventricular runs)
Bigeminy
Trigeminy
